Description : Shamanism is probably the oldest spiritual path, and also the most individual. In The Celtic Wheel of Life Andy Baggott gives a very personal interpretation of ancient Celtic spiritual culture. "Each individual followed their own intuition and instinct. Because everyone lived and ate in harmony with creation, the tribe remained balanced." Some of this book will be familiar to those already exploring different areas of Neo-Pagan or New Age spirituality: the eight festivals, working with the natural calendar rather than against it, respect for plants and animals, and so on. But the author has also adapted some ideas from other traditions, particularly Chinese and Native American. It is in his prescriptions on healthy eating that Baggott is at his most individual. Avoiding refined sugar, milk products, food additives and too much red meat is fairly well accepted, but probably few readers would want to follow his example too closely: a diet of five-eighths grains, two-eighths vegetables and one-eighth meat, which in practice means a lot of porridge, brown rice and "English" vegetables such as swedes, parsnips, carrots and cabbage--though not potatoes or tomatoes, as these are acidic. Baggott includes an interesting chapter on the ancient script of Ogham, going into some detail on the meaning and correspondences of each character, and describing how to make Ogham sets in wood, stone or clay. Unfortunately his various charts and tables don't actually include the shapes of the characters--but interested readers will readily find them in books by Nigel Pennick, Caitlin Matthews and others. As a description of the way of life of a practising shaman in the Celtic tradition, this book is an interesting contribution to New Age literature.--David V Barrett
